Reading Taste
I remember, long time ago, i sent my writing to a well-known newspaper in my country. They didn’t publish it. The comment they gave to me in the letter was taken as a positive critic by me. Even so, there was something that i was disappointed after that. I read the stories published every sunday. The story, the content, the ending…ddddduuuuuuhhhh??????…and you were criticizing my story????? duh? If I think about it now, it was gotta be the languange or story-telling style. In my country, they love ‘literature’ style. While me? I don’t really do that. I just read as my imagination plays. For me, it’s so funny that when I ‘see’ something, then, I tell about it in literature-way (-.-)’. I’ll tell it in NICHAN’s way. Moreover, I don’t like writing a story that is full of description, not much of conversation. It is like ‘reporting’ and boring. Morever, it is like summary or outline. Believe me, my outline can be more than 5 pages. Again, that’s how I write.
Long time ago, some people were so cynical about japanese comic flooding my country. I like japanese comic aka manga. I remember my friend purchased Candy-candy. I haven’t bought anything yet at that time. I didn’t really affond to Candy-candy. There weren’t many mangas at that time. So, I was a little bit too late purchasing it. I purchased others shortly after there was more option. People didn’t like about the ‘drawing’ of the manga at that time. The leg, bla, bla. People were making a WISHY WUSHU about the drawing! But we know now that manga and anime this day are a GIANT industry. People are serious about it. And you know what? in my opinion, the BEST manga or anime is (are) that with not-so-good drawing but the content is GREAT. On the other side, manga or anime with great draw sometimes…duh?…the story is so confusing and don’t know where to go. That’s why sometimes, many in my country are able to draw but unable to make a story.
I read a famous author’s book but couldn’t finish it. Really. Why? Because for me, it’s BORING! Sorry, but true. This person has inspired so many people but I still feel that his book is boring. The adventure is vague, empty, the conversation is mmm…i would say, it was kind of story i made when i was a kid (but different writing style of course). I can’t feel the difficulty, the adventure of the main character. His name kept said “the boy” “the boy”. For me, it was like “unreal”. For me although, it’s a fiction, it better mentions the name(s) and the character is ‘real’. Moreover, he wrote something that seems beautifully mysterious. A lot of people feel that. Somehow, I don’t. I feel that he wrote something that I’m living in. There’s nothing interesting about it, nothing new for me. I always feel that if one want to stop for a while and think deeply about something, they will see a lot of more beauty stuff rather than ‘reading’ it in the book. Each one has their own beauty-life. That book, in my opinion, is better to be called as summary, not a book. He could write better than that but again, a lot of people also love ‘beautiful-dreamy” way of story telling.
Perhaps, the best books I’ve ever read were Agatha Christies’s Hercule Poirot series and Harry Potter. Believe it or not, i learned something important from Curtain (Hercule Poirot series). It was such such such a beautiful story! told in a way that no one guess. It’s about the depth of human mind and really…i learned that and it has affected me in real life. And so many more. She told the stories not in ‘beautiful’ way like literature. She wrote it just as she imagined, make the scene becoming real instead absurd. Again, not all people likes Agatha’s book.
Moral of this post is:
If you are ever rejected about your writing, yes, it sucks and makes us sad but enjoy your writing. Still, sometimes, we of course need to improve. I still take the positive critiques from the newspaper but I don’t expect their reader will love my story. I write as I imagine with my style (even my husband doesn’t like my story telling way but if i tell him about something directly, he loves it…haha. in fact, the way i write is the same with the way i speak, but he likes it when i say it…haha). If your writing is rejected, perhaps, it’s not because something wrong with you. Perhaps, it’s because the readers are not suitable for your story.
one day, a friend read an “xxx” story in a newspaper. He said to me, writing story like that…i can do that, too. But, i knew he didn’t want to do that because it wasn’t “him”.
I think, from writer point of view writing is something that should be free, not categorized, not boxed. It’s gotta be free. Once it’s categorized or boxed, it’s a ‘industry’, then, publishing industries. We can’t blame them for doing that as they are segmenting market. Hey, accept that. It’s business! But it doesn’t make us stop writing in our own style, does it? (^.-)
